B vitamins may protect against macular degeneration,
Reports William Christen, ScD. Recent finding: Women over age 40 who took high doses of folic acid (a type of B vitamin) and vitamins B-6 and B-12 daily for seven years had a 41% lower risk for the dry form of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) than women who did not take the supplements. Food rich in B vitamins include beans, beef and spinach.
William Christen, ScD, is associate professor of medicine, Harvard Medical School, and associate epidemiologist, Brigham and Women's Hospital, both in Boston. He is leader of a study of 5,205 women, published in Archives of Internal Medicine.
