Flomax may cause complications

Monday, October 19, 2009 7:00 am

By: Chaim Bell, MD, PhD. Source: Bottom Line

Flomax may cause complications during or after cataract surgery, warns Chaim Bell, MD, PhD. Tamsulosin (Flomax) relieves urinary problems in older men with benign prostate enlargement - but for men having cataract surgery, it can cause serious problems, such as retinal detachment, a lost lens and inflammation. If the surgeon knows that a patient uses Flomax, he/she can plan for a more complicated operation. Possible alternative to Flomax: Medicines that work differently, such as finasteride (Proscar). Caution: Do not abruptly stop taking Flomax.
